The National Weather Service issues the following Special Weather Statement Saturday morning:

ACTIVE WEATHER TO RETURN TO NEW MEXICO NEXT WEEK...

AFTER A RELATIVELY QUIET FIRST HALF OF JANUARY BIG CHANGES ARE ON THE WAY. MOISTURE LADEN PACIFIC STORMS WILL MOVE INLAND NEXT WEEK AND PROVIDE SUBSTANTIAL PRECIPITATION FOR WESTERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO

THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF STORM SYSTEMS IS EXPECTED TO BRING LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS TO THE SOUTHWEST... WEST CENTRAL... SAN JUAN... JEMEZ AND SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS LATE MONDAY INTO TUESDAY WITH MIXED RAIN AND SNOW AT THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO.

A SECOND AND MORE POTENT SYSTEM WILL FOLLOW CLOSELY FOR TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY BRINGING HEAVIER AND MORE WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION. COLDER TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN PLACE FOR THIS STORM BRINGING THE POTENTIAL FOR SUBSTANTIAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS... ONCE AGAIN FAVORING THE WEST AND NORTHERN HIGH TERRAIN... AND PERHAPS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTH CENTRAL MOUNTAINS. ENOUGH COLD AIR MAY EXIST FOR A SOME SNOW ACCUMULATION IN THE CENTRAL VALLEYS AND WESTERN PLATEAUS.

THE THIRD STORM WILL BRING ADDITIONAL PRECIPITATION THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT... AGAIN FAVORING THE WEST AND CENTRAL AREAS. THIS STORM LOOKS TO CONTAIN THE GREATEST MOISTURE AND COLDEST TEMPERATURES. MAJOR SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE POSSIBLE FOR THE WESTERN AND CENTRAL MOUNTAINS... WITH LESSER BUT POTENTIALLY SIGNIFICANT SNOW AMOUNTS FOR LOWER ELEVATIONS.

COMBINING SNOW FROM ALL THREE STORMS WILL LIKELY BRING TREMENDOUS ACCUMULATIONS... MEASURED IN FEET INSTEAD OF INCHES... OVER THE WEST FACING SLOPES OF THE WESTERN AND CENTRAL MOUNTAINS.
