The month-long local Senior Olympic Games was in full swing this weekend.

With only about two weeks left in the Games, which runs from May 15-June 15, many senior Olympians were on-hand this weekend for Los Alamos’ competition in track and field, basketball and shuffleboard.

The big event of the weekend was the track and field competition, which took place Saturday morning at Sullivan Field. At the track and field meet, five women and six men in five different age categories took part in the events, the running events ranging in length from 100 meters to 1500 meters.

One of the more unique events of the track and field competition is the 800 meter estimate, in which competitors have to guess how long it will take them to complete two laps.

Ann ReVelle, one of the local coordinators for the event, said competitors must finish below their estimated finish time. An athlete that finishes too slowly is disqualified. The athlete that finishes closest to his or her predicted time is the winner.

John Warren, who finished the 800 in 5:13, was only 27 seconds off his predicted finish time, the closest estimate of the day.

In the men’s field competition Saturday, Bob Weeks posted some solid numbers, including a 30-foot, 6-inch shot put throw and a 79-foot, 4-inch javelin toss.
