Senior Olympics: Los Alamos Games kicking into high gear

The Los Alamos Senior Olympics are in full swing already and several more events get going this weekend.

Today, the basketball free throw and 3-point competition will be held at the YMCA at 2 p.m., while the recreational events of Frisbee throw for distance, softball throw and soccer kick will follow at East Park. Saturday will feature the track and field events, starting at 8 a.m. at Sullivan Field with competition to include running events, racewalking and field events of javelin, shot put, discus, high jump, and running long jump.

Events kicked off with badminton singles held at the Family YMCA May 15. Ann ReVelle and John Warren qualified for the New Mexico Senior Olympics State Games to be held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

The State Games will be held July 30-Aug. 3.

Table tennis saw eight athletes vying for spots on the 2008 State Games team. Qualifiers included ReVelle and Joyce Blanco in women’s singles and doubles. Men’s singles qualifiers were Abel Castillo, Cy Jakubowski, Jon Redman, Ed Stein, Richard Thompson and Warren. Warren and Redman will team up for men’s doubles. This year there are also two mixed doubles teams: ReVelle/Redman and Blanco/Warren.

May 18, the cycling races were held under windy conditions.
