Satisfying appetites and hopes at the Empty Bowls Project

The 15th Annual Los Alamos Empty Bowls Project will be held from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. All of the money raised from this annual event will go to support the work of Self Help Inc.For a $10 donation, attendees will choose a locally painted ceramic bowl, eat a delicious, homemade soup and bread lunch with dessert, and take the bowl home to keep. There will be live music by the Roaring Jelly band, the Four Fifths and the Hill String Quartet. The silent auction will have items ranging from original, one-of-a-kind artwork donated by local artists to Santa Fe Opera tickets, catered meals and weekend getaways.The event is produced by volunteer organizers, artists, potters, the Bowl Ladies, soup, bread and dessert makers, children, the faith community, businesses, and organizations in both Los Alamos and Santa Fe. Special thanks goes to Joyce Nickols, the coordinator of the Empty Bowls Project. Approximately 4,000 volunteer hours are given by people in the community. Underwriting from the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce MainStreet Project, LANB and Thrivent Financial/Care Abounds in Communities Program contributed to the success of the project.Self Help Inc., a United Way organization, is dedicated to supporting those in need in northern New Mexico. Since 1969, Self Help Inc. has provided consultation and advocacy, emergency financial assistance, school supplies and seed money grants to residents of Los Alamos, northern Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Taos counties.Community partners make Self Help’s services available to a broad spectrum of families who face challenging circumstances such as job loss, chronic or terminal illness, divorce, domestic violence and mental illness. Some of the many community partners are the Los Alamos/Northern New Mexico United Way, LANL Community Programs, LANB, New Mexico Community Foundation, The New Mexico Children’s Foundation and The Con Alma Foundation, Santa Fe Community Foundation, The Pojoaque Valley Fund, The Los Alamos Unitarian Church, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (White Rock and Los Alamos), Trinity on the Hill, The Los Alamos Jewish Center, United Church of Los Alamos, LA Cares and The Art Center at Fuller Lodge.Self Help Inc. is committed to enhancing families’ life skills by providing programs and services that focus on developing self-reliance. Each year, through fundraising, private and public contributions, and charitable grants the organization is able to support those who need help most during emergencies or in the quest to become economically self-sufficient. The guiding mission of the paid staff and office volunteers is to assist families in moving from surviving to thriving. Self Help serves approximately 1,500 families annually.“Last year was really hard for us in many aspects,” one client said in 2007. “We tried to stay positive, but it wasn’t always easy. But at the end of the year, we got tremendous support from you, people we hadn’t even known. Knowing that there are so many caring people around us makes us believe that this year will be a better one, and more importantly, gives us the courage to face the problems to make things better one by one. We will not give up on ourselves, and we will keep on striving for a better life.”
