Sandia labs researchers awarded federal grants

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science has awarded grants totaling $2.6 million to four Sandia National Laboratories researchers for computational research.

Their proposals would help create an exascale computer — one that would be 1,000 times faster than the fastest now available.

Sandia says faster technology would be useful in computation-intensive areas such as basic research, engineering, earth science, biology, materials science, energy issues and national security.

The grants are for three years each.
