The overwhelming scale of the twin disasters has prompted the Japanese government to request international assistance. Locally, Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church will coordinate with International Orthodox Christian Charities and its local and ecumenical partners in Japan.
The efforts of IOCC are to discover unmet needs that will complement the assistance being rendered by the Japanese and other governments in their efforts to help the Japanese people in this most difficult time.
IOCC has identified a great demand for several kits to be distributed to survivors, including one that contains basic health items. Each basic health kit will contain: A hand towel, a washcloth, a comb, a metal nail file or nail clipper, a bar of soap (bath size, new and in original wrapping), a toothbrush and six Band-Aids.
Members of Saint Dimitri will assemble these kits at 1 p.m. April 10 at the church and will ship the completed kits to IOCC at its warehouse facility in Maryland. Anyone wishing to participate either by helping with the assembly or by donating articles for the kit, is welcome to join the group.
