Colin Pedicini got off to a good start in the first pace race of 2009.

The 2009 pace race season officially got underway Tuesday at Sullivan Field’s track.

The pace race is a weekly event sponsored by Atomic City Roadrunners.

Pace racers make predictions of their finish times and the winners are those who get closest to their actual finish time.

Pedicini missed his predicted finish time by just one second Tuesday. He needed an excellent prediction to beat Michael Tierney, who was just four seconds off and Ted Romero who was eight seconds off.

The fastest finisher of the 1.5 mile run was Ted Romero. Romero posted a time of 9 minutes, 15 seconds to top David Kratzer’s finish of 11:40 and Tomasz Klimczuk’s 12:18.

Susie Murphy was the fastest female finisher, covering the distance in 13:26. Murphy was followed by Pamela Erickson (13:52) and Cuihuan Wang (15:32).

Pace races are held Tuesday nights during Daylight Savings Time hours at various spots around Los Alamos County.

The next pace race will be held Tuesday starting at the road to the water treatment plant in lower Bayo Canyon — the bottom of Main Hill Road. Race time is 6 p.m.
