The Los Alamos girls U19 rugby team picked up two big victories, one against New Mexico State University, and held its own against the University of New Mexico in recent play.
Los Alamos thumped Glendale, Colo., 72-0 in a trip to Denver, then traveled south to Las Cruces to soundly defeat NMSU’s women’s team 63-29. Los Alamos lost to UNM’s women’s team earlier this month by a count of 33-10.
Against Glendale’s Raptors, several players scored multiple times. Sidney Provan, Michelle Dinkel and Carlin Morris scored three tries in the game, while Jodi Cull-Host earned a pair of tries.
Also scoring for Los Alamos were Lauren Mendez and Morghan Medrick in the rout.
For its game against NMSU, Los Alamos picked up three players from the Atomic Sisters Rugby Club in Albuquerque to aid in the effort.
Dinkel again posted a big game, scoring four tries, three of them on long runs. Morris also added a try for Los Alamos.
Morgan Osborn, Gabriella Conley-Lopez, Orli Shlachter and Lauren Mendez we able control the tempo of the match by maintaining possession of the ball allowing Dinkel and Morris to break through NMSU for the scores.
Against UNM, former Los Alamos player and now Lobo captain Liz Dinkel helped her team jump to an early 15-0 lead. Michelle Dinkel scored a first-half try and stripped the ball from a UNM player to set-up another Los Alamos score.
Los Alamos trailed 25-10 at the break, but allowed just one UNM score after halftime. Rachel Brown, Alex Valdez joined Provan, Cull-Host, Shlachter, Osborn and Conley-Lopez in combining for a solid effort against a collegiate club.
Los Alamos coach Lyle Shay said he was proud of his team’s effort despite the loss, adding he thought it was the team’s best effort to date.
