Molly Jean Willms was recently honored as Rotary Student of the Month for December.

Willms invited her choir teacher Paula Nichols to join her in accepting this honor, because, Willms said, “Mrs. Nichols brings out the best in her students and is a joy to be around.”

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos selects one outstanding student from the current Los Alamos High School graduating class to honor each month of the school year.

Students are selected on the basis of their academics, extracurricular activities and their service to the community.

Born and raised in Los Alamos, Willms has been blessed with a church family and excellent teachers, coaches and music instructors over the years. In turn, Willms has pursued music, athletics and service to her community in her high school years.

Willms has participated in band and choir for four years and is currently serving as drum major for the ’Topper Marching Band and president for Bel Canto Choir. Willms auditioned and was selected for all-state choir her junior and senior years.

In her athletic endeavors, Willms has been competitive in volleyball, track and field and swimming. She was a part of the district champion volleyball teams for the past two years and was selected for first-team all-district honors her senior year.

She was a part of the state champion track and field team her junior year, earning the district champion title in discus.

In addition to swimming for the junior varsity swim team two years, she worked as a lifeguard at East Park Pool this past summer.

Willms has served as an officer for the LAHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes group for the past three years. She said getting together with other students at the weekly FCA meetings has anchored her time at LAHS.

Willms is a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys performing in the annual ’Topper Revues and likes to sing with her youth group worship team. She has participated with other Crossroads Bible Church youth in several mission trips to Juarez, Mexico and inner-city Los Angeles where they built homes and churches and volunteered in a variety of ministries in these communities. Willms is interested in pursuing a career in a health-related field or music education. She is the daughter of Scott and Patty.
