The fact the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team was coming off its first win of the season into Thursday’s game didn’t seem to impress the Roswell Coyotes.
The Coyotes, the undefeated No. 1 team in Class 4A, handed the Hilltoppers one of the most lopsided losses in the history of the school. The Coyotes scored 73 points in the first half, crushing the Hilltoppers 97-27 in the opening round of the Poe Corn Invitational.
Roswell put up 40 points in the second quarter to stretch its lead at the half to 57 points. Roswell took its foot off the accelerator in the second half, but the Hilltoppers (1-7) could only manage 4 points in the third quarter.
Heading into Thursday’s game, Los Alamos had beaten District 2-4A rival Bernalillo 68-60 to finally break into the win column, but Roswell (8-0) is averaging 75.5 points per game this season and hadn’t been involved in a contest decided by less than 14 points.
Los Alamos was scheduled to take on Piedra Vista this afternoon. Piedra Vista lost in another first round game to Grants Thursday, 80-72.
Also in Thursday’s first round, Artesia hammered Farmington 65-32.
