The Goddard Rockets and the Los Lunas Tigers square off for the state Class 4A football championship tonight.
Goddard, the No. 1 seed and Los Lunas, the No. 2 seed, will play at Los Lunas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. All Class 2-5 state championship games, which will be played this weekend, can be streamed live at nmaafilms.tv.
The Rockets (11-0) and the Tigers (12-0) were the only two undefeated 4A teams in the 2012 regular season. The Tigers scored a whopping 550 points this season (45.8 points per game) and allowed only 86 points, including shutting out five opponents.
In fact, this season, the only team that scored more than 8 points against Los Lunas was Aztec, which the Tigers defeated 24-20 in last week’s 4A semifinal round.
Goddard, meanwhile defeated Moriarty and Belen in the playoffs by a combined score of 69-14 to reach the championship game for the fifth time in the past seven years. Goddard won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009 and finished as the runner-up behind Aztec, losing a nail-biting finale 28-27 last year.
Los Lunas has never won a state football title.
Also tonight, Las Cruces and Sandia will face off at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque for the Class 5A championship. Saturday, Silver will play St. Michael’s at Ivan Head Stadium in Santa Fe for the Class 3A crown while Tularosa will be at Santa Rosa for the Class 2A title game.
