The annual Firecracker 5K Fun Run is set to go off again Saturday, while kickballs will be in the air in White Rock.
The Firecracker 5K, which is sponsored by the Family YMCA of Los Alamos, will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, while the Los Alamos County-sponsored Red, White and Blue Kickball tournament is slated for a 9 a.m. start at Overlook Park.
Day-of race registration for the Firecracker 5K is scheduled for 7-7:45 a.m. in the YMCA’s parking lot (1450 Iris St.).
Price for participation in this year’s race is $20. A lottery-style draw for prizes will be held following the race.
Last year, the race attracted 131 runners and walkers.
In the 2008 race, Ryan McNiff was the men’s overall winner, finishing in a time of 16 minutes, 5 seconds, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Blake Wood.
The women’s overall winner last year was Holly Walker. Walker finished with a time of 19:47.49, beating out Margaret Wood by approximately 17 seconds.
The 5K run will start at the YMCA. The course heads down Canyon Road, past Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and down to the lower parking lot at Los Alamos High School before heading back to the YMCA.
For more information about the race, call the YMCA at 662-3100.
The kickball tournament, which will be held on the Overlook Park softball fields, returns for the fourth straight year. The double-elimination tournament is a coed event.
The tournament is free to spectators.
