For the second year in a row, the New Mexico Renegades ice hockey team will venture up to Los Alamos for an outdoor contest.
The Renegades, a Junior A team who play their home contests in Rio Rancho, are a member of the Western States Hockey League. The event is dubbed the Winter Class Fusion Series 2.
Saturday, the Renegades will face the Wichita Thunder at Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Pregame starts at 4 p.m. and game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Last February, New Mexico hosted the Cheyenne Stampede in the first ever official outdoor game in WSHL history — the league was founded in 1994. The event was a successful one and New Mexico elected to make a return trip this season.
The upcoming game is the second of a 3-game series between New Mexico and Wichita, who face off tonight and Sunday in Rio Rancho.
This is the fourth year of existence for the Renegades, who are being guided this year by new head coach Mike Stanaway. Stanaway has led the team to a 12-19-0 record so far, which places them fifth in the six-team Mountain Division, 45 points behind the El Paso Rhinos, who are running away with the division crown.
In the 2012-13 season, the Renegades have been paced offensively by Dakota Beaulieu. Beaulieu has tallied 22 goals and 9 assists on the season.
