Anyone who has been affected by cancer knows what a rough road recovery can be. Whether they are survivors, or have lost someone to the disease, coping with cancer is never easy.
Various fundraisers are held in an effort to raise money for cancer research and services for cancer patients. The American Cancer Society’s Los Alamos Relay for Life is one of those events.
The kick off for Relay for Life will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Los Alamos Co-op Market, 95 Camino Entrada, next to the Holiday Inn Express. The organization is currently trying to get teams together for the Relay, a 16-hour event on Aug. 5 and 6 at Ashley Pond. Team captains are also being sought. The captains are responsible for helping their team organize fundraising efforts.
“We will provide information about Relay for Life and sign up teams for the Relay event,” said Relay Publicity Chairperson Alan Wadlinger. “We’re looking for team leaders and people who want to get involved.”
He also said the first 10 team captains that register their team will receive a Relay for Life hat. Wadlinger said online sign-up is available, but it’s easier to go to the kickoff and sign up.
In addition to team members and team leaders, Relay for Life is also seeking sponsors who wish to donate money. Anyone can make a donation or be a sponsor.
Last year, the Relay raised more than $35,000 and Wadlinger is hoping the event will raise even more this year.
According to a press release, the Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those who lost their battle with cancer and is a way for everyone to fight against cancer, while raising money for services and research.
“We want to cure cancer because it devastates all those involved,” Wadlinger said.
Anyone can participate in the Relay, however, Wadlinger said he hopes to get more cancer survivors to participate.
“We like to see more survivors,” Wadlinger said. “It gives them (cancer patients) the opportunity to hear about them (the survivors) and gives them hope. They provide a bit of strength and enthusiasm to go fight the good battle.”
