Los Alamos students have scientifically tested the world around them, and their experiments will be evaluated when they head to the regional science fair Saturday in Las Vegas, NM.Out of 164 entrants from the county event, 47 will take the two-hour trek to compete in the next level.“We have a committee of very excited, experienced and devoted parents, teachers, site coordinators and community members,” said Los Alamos Public Schools curriculum specialist Dawn Brown. “This enthusiasm definitely filtered to down the students. The students were eager to participate, and to be interviewed by the judges.”The county science fair participants received more than $3,500 in cash awards, gift certificates and prizes from 41 organizations, individuals and local businesses. They also received more than $700 from organizations and local business to purchase science fair t-shirts for the students. “The community support we received ensured every participant went home with an award,” Brown said.According to Brown, during the county science fair, the judges and students received snacks and meals prepared and served by the high school FCCLA students and their instructor Juanita Jabbanema. Brown believes that the strong support from our community, mentors and teachers is what helps to excite and encourage participants. Brown’s husband Art and daughter Ariana were among the many volunteers drafted to pull off the event. The number of volunteers that supported the event is too large to mention, but impossible without them, according to Brown.
