Raymond Allen Gore

Gore – Raymond Allen Gore, 73, died surrounded by his loving family June 17, 2008. His death is a devastating loss for his family and friends. But his life — his full, humorous, giving, loving life — was a triumph. Ray exemplified such positive energy, incredible strength and enormous joy to those around him.

Ray was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Sparks, Nev., to Jefferson and Margaret Gore and was one of eight children. Ray received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico. Ray spent two years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif., before moving to New Mexico. He began working at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1958 with Group CMB-7 and supported the chemistry and metallurgical research within CMB Division. In 1961, Ray joined the Rover program (the nuclear-powered rocket engine) in Group N-4 doing computer modeling of the engine for control and instrumentation design and hardware development for power tests in Nevada.

In 1966, Ray joined MP Division to support building the 800-MeV proton accelerator that would become the heart of the particle physics research to be done at LAMPF. Ray became group leader of the instrumentation and controls group, MP-1, in 1972.
