With over 80 players in the Los Alamos Youth Football program, ranging from 6 to 12 years of age, the future looks bright for prep football in Los Alamos. The Los Alamos Rams (9-10 year olds), one of five Los Alamos Youth Football teams that compete in the Santa Fe Youth American Football League (YAFL), capped off an undefeated regular season with a Chile Bowl Championship Nov. 3-4. After going 8-0, against teams from Pecos, Pojoaque, Santa Fe and Los Alamos during the regular season, the Rams defeated the Los Alamos Wolves 13-0 in the first round of the Chile Bowl playoffs at Capital High School in Santa Fe. The win set up a rematch against the Santa Fe Lobos, who the Rams beat 6-0 during the regular season, in what was the Rams toughest game of the year. The championship game would not be as close. The Rams’ stingy defense and high-powered offense (they outscored opponents 190-12) dismantled the Lobos 25-0 in the championship game. The Rams, led by team captains, Jared Mang, Zack Sturgeon and Elliot Hersman finished the season with a perfect record of 10-0. Other Los Alamos teams that competed in the Chile Bowl playoffs were the second-place 6-8 year old Lightening (8-2), the fourth-place Wolves (4-5), and the third-place 11-12 year old Mad Dogs (4-4). The 6-8 year old LA Thunder just missed the playoffs this year after losing a few close games.
