Quentin Dwayne Appert

Appert – Quentin Dwayne Appert, 70, Los Alamos, died on March 19, 2008, in Los Alamos of pancreatic cancer.He was born Sept. 11, 1937, in Hazelton, N.D., the son of Tony and Marcella (Garske) Appert. He grew up in North Dakota and attended the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1959 with a B.S. degree in physics and in 1961 with a M.S. degree in physics. In 1961, he moved to southern California, where he worked in the aerospace industry at North American Aviation Inc. and Northrop Corporation until 1979, when he began working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M. He retired from the laboratory in 1998, but continued working there as a contractor until 2007.Quentin had a distinguished scientific career contributing to cutting-edge research and development in support of the laboratory’s national security programs. He came to LANL initially to work on the Antares Project (Internal Confinement Fusion Laser), and was manager for the alignment systems. He later worked on the Free Electron Laser project, leading the program in cooled laser optics and resonator development. In later years, Quentin s work centered on R&D to make the world a safer place, by developing methods for destroying old weapons and converting their materials into peaceful purposes.
