Pumpkins crop up at Piñon Elementary

Fall is officially here and that means it’s time for Piñon Elementary’s Annual Pumpkin Patch.
This year’s Pumpkin Patch will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 23. This is Piñon Parent Teacher Organization’s fifth year of hosting the community event.
“The Pumpkin Patch grows a little bit bigger and more exciting every year and this looks to be our best year yet,” said Kelly Benner, president of the Pumpkin Patch committee.
As the name suggests, the school’s playground will be turned into a huge pumpkin patch. This allows children (and adults) to wander through and pick out their perfect pumpkin.
Not only will Piñon’s PTO sell pumpkins, the event has now turned into a family festival, as well. This year the event will include a large climbing wall, a bouncy house, games, crafts, face painting, a maze, a pie contest and much more. Tickets to participate in the individual games, crafts and activities will be sold for a fee.
Last year, Kenny’s North Carolina BBQ was a big hit, so he’ll be back this year with both breakfast and lunch items.
“We really appreciate Kenny being there, not only does he provide great food, but he makes a generous donation to Piñon PTO,” Benner said.
As they’ve done in the past, Piñon PTO will give away a free glow stick necklace with the purchase of every pumpkin, while supplies last. This is an item for children to wear while trick or treating.
There’s also a new addition this year; a scarecrow contest. The winning entry will be displayed at the Los Alamos Main Street event. Those who wish to submit a scarecrow entry are required to register with Jill Beck, jillbeckmail@yahoo.com.
Benner adds, “Although this is a fundraiser for Piñon Elementary, we really look at this event as a community festival. We try to keep the fees as low as possible to ensure that all can participate. There will be something for everyone.“
All proceeds from this event go into the Piñon Elementary School’s PTO general budget, which helps to pay for school and teacher supplies, field trips and other needed items. Piñon Elementary is located at 90 Grand Canyon in White Rock.
