Dear Editor,
LA Cares is a nonprofit organization serving only Los Alamos County. Our primary purpose is to provide boxes of food to any resident or family who is in need. In the last two years, the number of boxes we are preparing monthly has increased substantially, hence the purpose of this letter.
We prepare our boxes the second Thursday of the month, for the next day, Friday, and we are in need of additional volunteers to help us pack the boxes. Packing boxes of food is not glamorous, but it is very rewarding to know that one has packed a box of healt hy food, which may sustain a family or a senior citizen for a period of time, and that without that box, that family or person might have actually have gone without food, even here in Los Alamos.
We are also in need of one or two additional drivers to deliver boxes of food within Los Alamos for people who cannot, for many reasons, pick them up. Reliability is the most important issue here, so we are looking for perhaps a retired person with a few hours to spare on the Friday of distribution, which, again, is always the second Friday of the month.
We generally pack from about 6:30 p.m. to whenever we are finished, often 9 p.m. or so, but all volunteers can put in as much time, with a minimum of one hour, as they feel they can donate. All simple training is provided.
