Prep boys hoops: LA falls at Lovington, Artesia

‘Toppers drop a pair of games before entering District 2-5A play

The Los Alamos boys basketball team dropped a pair of troublesome road games this past weekend.
The Hilltoppers fell to Artesia 56-44 on Friday night, and dropped a 53-49 decision to Lovington on Saturday.
Los Alamos got off to strong start against the Bulldogs and garnered a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. Artesia responded in the second frame by outscoring the Hilltoppers 15-6 and taking 24-19 lead at halftime. Artesia continued to execute in the third quarter and extended its lead to 43-30, before fending off Los Alamos in the final eight minutes.
Against Lovington, the Hilltoppers led 12-11 after the opening eight minutes and maintained a point lead as the teams were even 8-8 during the second quarter. Trailing 20-19, the Wildcats used a 14-point third quarter performance to take a 33-22 lead heading into the final frame. Lovington sealed the win by outscoring Los Alamos 20-17 in the fourth.
After the back-to-back losses Los Alamos fell to 8-9 overall and will open District 2-5A play at 7 p.m. against Del Norte at Griffith Gym.
