Power outages plague households

A fault in a direct-bury cable caused an 8-hour power outage north of Myrtle Street to the Pueblo Canyon rim early Sunday morning, Los Alamos County’s Department of Public Utilities said in a press release Tuesday.

Power was out in the area from 1:30-9:30 a.m. Sunday, which affected roughly 85 households.

Another two outages occurred just after noon Monday, which affected 40 customers at Royal Crest Mobile Home Park. Power was out to those customers for 23 minutes.

Also Monday, 12 business customers in the East Gate area lost power for two hours with an outage starting at approximately 3 p.m.

Sunday’s outage was more extensive than Monday’s two outages.

In that outage, problems occurred with the electric line located in close proximity to a live electric line and a natural gas line. Department of Public Utilities electric linemen were required to dig by hand, rather than use a back hoe, to locate and expose the fault.  

Crews dug throughout the early morning until the line was made accessible. The county’s DPU electric linemen made repairs restoring power by 9:30 a.m.

A bird was the cause of the Royal Crest outage at 12:19 p.m. Monday, while a fault on an overhead line on Los Alamos National Laboratory’s equipment affected East Gate businesses.
