The power of breakfast

-A A +A
By Kirsten Laskey

Pancakes can do more than just satisfy people’s appetites, they can provide a community service. For instance, Kiwanis members are hosting a breakfast with Santa from 7-11 a.m. Saturday at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. The admission may be free, but participants are asked to help out in their community by either donating nonperishable food to LA Cares or contributing money to the Kiwanis’ foster children’s party. The menu for the breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, milk and juice. Additionally, children get their picture taken with a major celebrity, Santa Claus. The event, which is part of WinterFest, has been held since 1994 and has been a big draw for residents, Joan Hurd, Kiwanis Club member, said.Pat Soran, another Kiwanis member, said they usually gather truckloads of canned goods and raise about $1,000 for the foster children’s party.Hurd credited Santa for luring children and families to the event. She added, “It’s a great family event, something for every age.”Additionally, it serves worthy causes, Hurd said.Soran said nonperishable food is given to LA Cares because it has the means to store and distribute the food. Additionally, the foster children’s party started 10 years ago.
