Potent Pacific Storm System Takes Aim at New Mexico

-A A +A

A PACIFIC STORM SYSTEM... CURRENTLY MOVING SOUTH JUST OFFSHORE OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA... WILL SWING EAST TOWARD ARIZONA THURSDAY THEN LIFT NORTHEAST TOWARD THE FOUR CORNERS AREA ON FRIDAY.

RICH GULF MOISTURE... CURRENTLY POISED OVER CENTRAL TEXAS... WILL RACE NORTHWEST AHEAD OF THE APPROACHING STORM SYSTEM AND INVADE THE EASTERN PLAINS OF NEW MEXICO LATE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY. THIS MOISTURE WILL ACT AS FUEL FOR THUNDERSTORMS LATE THURSDAY AND ESPECIALLY FRIDAY. A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE FAR EASTERN PLAINS LATE FRIDAY... WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS BEING THE PRIMARY THREATS.

THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST ACROSS CENTRAL AND EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE AREA AS WELL... BUT ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BECOME SEVERE. BENEFICIAL RAINS ARE EXPECTED LATE THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY... ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE SEVERELY DROUGHT STRICKEN EASTERN PLAINS.

IN ADDITION TO THUNDERSTORM THREATS THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PACIFIC COLD FRONT... FORECAST TO PUSH THROUGH NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO FRIDAY EVENING. WINDS BOTH AHEAD OF AND BEHIND THE FRONT WILL INCREASE NOTICEABLY FRIDAY... WITH WINDY CONDITIONS FORECAST ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA.

A WIND ADVISORY MAY BECOME NECESSARY FOR CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE AREA... INCLUDING THE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN AND ADJACENT EASTERN HIGHLANDS. SHOWERS AND HIGHER ELEVATION SNOW SHOWERS WILL LINGER FRIDAY NIGHT... ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN MOUNTAINS IN CLOSER PROXIMITY TO THE UPPER LOW. NO SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE FORECAST... BUT ANY NOTABLE SNOWFALL WILL BE LIMITED TO THE HIGHEST PEAKS.
