Symetra Financial recognized Whitney Pomeroy, an English teacher at Los Alamos High School, as a “Top Teacher” recently. Los Alamos High School Principal Sandra Warnock presented the award during Pomeroy’s School of Choice English class.
In addition to the award, Pomeroy received a $1,000 donation from Symetra for classroom books and supplies. She was one of five teachers from across the nation selected by Symetra for this prestigious award. Symetra seeks to honor teachers who go above and beyond in preparing children for the future.
“Ms. Pomeroy quietly goes about her day turning lives around,” said Eugene Schmidt, superintendent of the Los Alamos Public Schools. “Through the gift of her School of Choice program, disengaged and disenfranchised students come to realize they have value. SOC has become the key to success for academically struggling students and a critical path to graduation for many.”
Schmidt said Pomeroy dedicates her professional career to the improved quality of life for her students. Schmidt and Warnock nominated Pomeroy for the Top Teacher award.
For Symetra’s Top Teacher competition, school district staff, a current or former principal or financial advisors, submitted teacher nominations.
Winners were selected based on their ability to balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.
Pomeroy has taught at Los Alamos High School for the past nine years.  She completed her undergraduate work at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. and her master’s degree at Highland University in Las Vegas, N.M.
