SOCORRO, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say three people, including a 3-year-old boy and a pregnant woman, were killed when the driver of a truck fell asleep and the truck overturned.
New Mexico State Police spokesman Emmanuel Gutierrez said the deadly accident occurred early Sunday 10 miles west of Socorro, N.M.
According to investigators, 42-year-old Fred Apachito fell asleep while driving a 1998 Dodge Truck. Police say the vehicle, carrying eight passengers, crossed onto the east bound lane of traffic, then struck a culvert before overturning.
Killed in the accident were Fred Apachito, 25-year-old Delrena Apachito, of Magdalena N.M. and her son, 3-year-old Shaijon (SHAY'-jon) Apachito. Investigators say Delrena Apachito was five months pregnant.
Three other occupants were airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and were listed in critical condition.
