LeRoy N. Sanchez, a Los Alamos National Laboratory photographer for more than 37 years, has provided photographic coverage for many inaugural ceremonies for New Mexico governors, both Democrat and Republican, for more than 30 years.
This coverage includes the second and third terms for Gov. Bruce King, as well as the Inaugurals of governors Toney Anaya, Garrey Carruthers, Gary Johnson and most recently, New Mexico's first woman and first female Hispanic Gov. Susana Martinez.
Sanchez covered her inaugural ceremonies over a two-day period from the mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, her swearing-in ceremonies in the Capitol Rotunda Dec. 31 and all the festivities Jan. 1, which included a historic swearing-in on the Plaza during record cold temperatures, to the official Inaugural Ball and dinner that evening.
Twenty of Sanchez’ photographs are hanging in the Governor's Gallery at the State Capitol, having been whittled down from about 900 images of the Inaugural events.
Sanchez’ photographic career has spanned nearly 40 years and taken him around the world. He was a photographer for the U.S. Naval Reserve in Vietnam 1969-70, covered the swearing-in of New Mexico’s U.S. Ambassador to Spain, Ed Romero, in Madrid and worked as a White House photographer with the Clinton-Gore Administration in 1994-95.
