James Coburn, son of Martha Perkins of Santa Fe and Steven Coburn of Los Alamos, has been named to the academic honor roll for bloc four and five of the current school year at Colorado Timberline Academy.

Jonathan Vander Wiel of Los Alamos was recognized for outstanding academic accomplishments by being named to the LeTourneau University dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester.

Los Alamos High School graduate Peter Ahrens has won the New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers scholarship. Ahrens will study electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California at Berkeley this fall. He has also received a $2,000 New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge scholarship and a $300 Aspen School scholarship. He was named a National Merit Finalist Scholar.  He is the son of Christine and Jim Ahrens.

Brianna Walsh of Los Alamos  graduated from Beloit College on May 13 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies.

Seven Los Alamos students are among the winners of the UNM-PNM 2011-2012 Statewide Mathematics Contest. There were 23 finalists this year. The winners from Los Alamos schools are: Do Vo (teacher Allen Thomas), second place in fifth grade from Aspen School; David Gao (teacher Lise Chrien), first place in sixth grade from Piñon Elementary School; Andrew Tang (teacher Amy Bartlett), second place from Los Alamos Middle School; Alexandr Wang (teacher Joy Handsberry), first place in ninth grade and first place overall from Los Alamos High School; Daniel Ahrens (teacher Nikol Strother and Sally Shockey), first place in 10th grade from LAHS; and Kevin Gao (teacher Joy Handsberry), fifth place in 11th grade from LAHS. The winners and their teachers were recognized for their accomplishment at a banquet April 28 at the UNM Student Union.
The UNM-PNM Statewide Mathematics Contest is an annual contest consisting of two rounds. The second round was at UNM campus in February. The goal of the contest is to promote mathematics education in New Mexico by rewarding students, teachers and their schools for mathematics excellence. Approximately 1,500 New Mexico students benefit from this program annually.

   Elisa Baker of Los Alamos received a master’s degree in fire protection engineering at the 144th Commencement exercises at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Kevin Ecke graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from Colorado College. Ecke is the son of Robert Ecke and Cheryl Smith-Ecke of Los Alamos.

Nicole Silks of Los Alamos, has been placed the deans’ commendation list for outstanding academic achievement in the Spring 2012 at Gettysburg College.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced the students named to the deans’ list/honor roll for the spring semester of the 2011-12 academic year. Students from Los Alamos who qualified included: Shelby Marie Courtright, junior, dietetics major, College of Education and Human Sciences; and Lindsey Michal Gonzales, senior, mechanical engineering major, College of Engineering.

Air Force Airman David P. Nielsen graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Nielsen is the son of Eileen Nielsen of Los Alamos. He is a 2011 graduate of Los Alamos High School.

At the June 10 annual meeting of the Los Alamos Little Theatre, members elected the new Board of Directors and applauded the 2012 recipient of the LALT scholarship.
Los Alamos High School graduate Aidan Bradbury-Aranda received the $1,000 LALT scholarship, given for academic achievement and intent to pursue a career associated with the performing arts. Bradbury-Aranda will attend the University of Southern California where he was accepted into the School of Cinematic Arts.
