Eric Edelmann, this month’s Rotary Student of the Month, is a senior at Los Alamos High School. During the Rotary ceremony, he named Diane Toups, a guidance counselor at the high school, as an adult who’s had an impact on him.
He is highly active in the community, as president of the Natural Helpers Club and a leader among his peers, as a member of both the Los Alamos Youth Leadership and the high school student government.
He is also an athlete as part of the high school’s cross country team and varsity tennis team. In the coming months, he hopes to find out more from the universities he has applied to and move on to study physics or engineering.

Thomas Witherell of Los Alamos, a junior and finance major, was named to the president’s list for the fall 2010 semester at Bentley University, Waltham, Mass.

Principal Debbie Smith announced that Cody C. Maggiore, a 6th grade student at Chamisa Elementary, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Dec. 17 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee. School winners, including Maggiore, then took a written test with up to 100 of the top scorers in the state eligible to compete in the state Bee April 1. Maggiore was accepted into the state level of the National Geographic Bee.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses- paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the Bee national championship rounds  May 21-25.
The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of the Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.

Marie A. Baumgartner of Los Alamos made the fall 2010 president’s list at West Texas A&M University. Baumgartner is a senior majoring in agribusiness/equine industry and business.

Courtney L. Cook, daughter of Paul and Jill Cook, has made the dean’s list at University of New Mexico for the fall 2010 semester. Students must have earned a semester G.P.A of 3.5 or higher and completed at least twelve credit hours to quality for this honor.

Kaitlyn Renee McCranie of Los Alamos made the Seattle Pacific University 2010 autumn quarter dean’s list. Students on the dean’s List have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade point average.

Megan E. Goldstein of Los Alamos was named to the president’s list for fall semester 2010 at Gonzaga University.

Michelle Aurelius from Santa Fe was crowned Mrs. New Mexico on March 13 in Albuquerque. She also won the Mrs. Congeniality and Best in Interview awards.
She will advance on to compete in the nationally televised Mrs. America Pageant in April at the Greenbriar, America’s Resort, in West Virginia.

The National Society of High School Scholars announced that Los Alamos High School student Alexandra Berl has been selected for membership.
The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved academic excellence.
