Hipwoods named state Coaches of the Year in girls cross country by national federation
The National Federation of High Schools selected Los Alamos Hilltopper head coaches Rob and Kathy Hipwood as its Coaches of the Year in girls cross country for the 2013 season.
The NFHS is the official national coaches association and honors coaches at the state, sectional and national level.
This season, the Hipwoods, who are now the longest-serving coaches at Los Alamos High School, led the girls team to its fifth consecutive state championship. Los Alamos finished with 53 team points to top runner-up Albuquerque Academy at the 4A championship meet, held in November.
The Los Alamos girls cross country team is the most successful girls program in the history of the state, having won 17 team titles, 15 of them under the Hipwoods.
Baca inducted into NMTCCCA Hall of Fame
Larry Baca, the longtime boys track and field coach at Los Alamos High School, was inducted into the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame last weekend.
Baca, who stepped away from the team for three seasons but returns for the spring season, was honored at a ceremony by the NMTCCCA Saturday.
Baca was undefeated at the District 2-4A meet between 2000-10, guiding the team to crushing victories at the 2-4A meet every year in that time frame, and led the Hilltoppers to a state championship in 2008.
He stepped down from his post after the 2010 season. He retired as a teacher at the school and, per New Mexico regulations, also had to vacate his head coaching job.
After a three-year absence, Baca returns this season, taking over for Matt Felton, who led the team for the previous two years, and Rob Hipwood, who was the head coach for the 2011 season.
