Parts of Los Alamos left in the dark

-A A +A

Customers on the south side of Trinity to the end of DP Road were affected

By Special to the Monitor

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities was notified this morning at 6 a.m. that customers on the south side of Trinity from 20th Street to the end of DP Road have partial power.  Electric linemen are currently working to restore full power to the failed phase of the three phase electric backbone serving this area.

It is more than likely that this failed phase is part of the power outage that occurred last night at 10 p.m., but because the area affected is primarily businesses, it was not reported until this morning.

A failed underground cable was the cause of last night’s outage affecting approximately 900 customers. Boundaries of that outage included roughly Trinity to Canyon between 20th Street to the end of DP Road. Linemen isolated the problem area and restored power to customers north of Trinity by

11 p.m. Power was back fed to the remaining customers on the south side of Trinity through another circuit. This circuit lost a phase and is currently the cause of this morning’s partial outage.

In addition, electric linemen with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities restored power to all customers affected by this morning’s power outage by 12:13 p.m.

Cause of the partial outage on the south side of Trinity from 20th Street to the end of DP Road was a result of two underground faults which resulted in one phase of the three phase electric backbone that serves the downtown area to fail.  Once the faults were identified it was necessary for crews to de-energize the other two phases to conduct repairs.

The affected area went from a partial outage to a complete outage at 10:15 a.m.

Linemen isolated the first fault and restored power to properties from Knecht to 20th Street by 10:20 a.m. leaving the area from Knecht to the end of DP Road without power.  The second fault was exposed when a third cable faulted where crews were working.

This fault resulted in all of circuit 14, bounded by Trinity to Canyon and 20th Street to East Gate, to momentarily lose power. Crews restored power to the majority of customers on DP Road Road by 11:57 a.m. and restored power to the remaining customers by 12:13 p.m.
