Is park multi-use or skate-only?

Dear Editor,

I have heard many arguments both in favor of and against the proposed “skate park.” Many citizens have voiced their opinions, some saying that the downtown area will be blighted by such a project, and others who have the desire to revitalize the downtown area. One major point seems to be getting lost in the furor.

As I understand it, this is not a proposed skateboard facility. This is a proposed multi-purpose facility that can be used for skateboarding. The intention is not to construct a venue simply for the use of our skateboarding youth but to have an area that can be used for concerts, farmers markets, arts and crafts fairs, and other events – something that can be enjoyed by the entire community and not just a select group.

If this facility is built for a single purpose, then I must side with the naysayers and disagree with the construction of the site for skateboarding only. However, if it is designed with its intention as a multi-use facility, then its purpose becomes more than one-dimensional and becomes a community-shared common area with many possibilities. That is something I can agree with and get excited about.
