The absence of snow on Pajarito Mountain does not mean that the ski area is closed for business.

The chairlifts are still open and the slopes are not empty as they wait for the winter months.

No, Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is keeping busy. Take this weekend, for instance, one of the ski lifts will be in operation for two days of hiking and biking.

The lift will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The fee for bikers is $20 and for hikers, the price is $10. The fee covers the whole day.

This is a popular event, Tom Long, general manager at the ski hill, said. “So far, the event has been very well attended.”

The views are great and the mountain is beautiful, he said.

Plus, “It’s a great way to enjoy the mountain without pedaling your machine up the hill,” Long said.

In addition to the hiking and biking, the Los Alamos Summer Concert series will travel to the mountain for its latest concert, which will feature John Németh, a blues singer. The concert, which is free, will start at 7 p.m. Friday.

Long encourages people to attend these activities to “just get away and enjoy the scenery and the venue has been successful.”

The lift will continue to be operational throughout the summer months.

According to the ski area’s website, additional lift days will be held on July 18-19, Aug.1, Aug. 15-16, Aug. 29, Sept. 12-13 and Sept. 26.

Lift days are always held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
