By Mike Cote

Bernalillo Spartans

Overall record: 9-7

Key wins: at Belen, Nov. 29; vs. Moriarty, Dec. 8; at Academy, Jan. 7.

Key losses: vs. Los Lunas, Dec. 6; vs. Piedra Vista, Dec. 29; vs. Del Norte, Jan. 5.

Outlook: The Spartans could be the X factor in 2-4A this season, something that could be doubly true if they can knock off the Hilltoppers tonight. The Spartans boast a senior-heavy roster and decent size in the paint. They won’t be afraid to bang with any team near the basket.

Capital Jaguars

Overall record: 3-12

Key wins: at Sandia Prep, Jan. 13

Key losses: vs. Santa Fe Prep, Dec. 1; at Taos, Dec. 15; vs. St. Michael’s, Jan. 5.

Outlook: For a team that was expected to be competitive coming into the season, the nondistrict slate was a disaster for the Jaguars. On five separate occasions, the Jaguars have been held to 20 points or less. It has not defeated a Class 4A team this season and one of its three victories was against St. Michaels’ junior varsity team. However, Capital still sports veterans Alyssa Garcia and Stephanie Oellion.

Española Valley Sundevils

Overall record: 16-1

Key wins: at Pojoaque, Dec. 21; vs. Farmington, Dec. 27; at Miyamura, Jan. 12.

Key losses: vs. Mayfield, Dec. 17.

Outlook: Definitely the team to beat in 2-4A, the Sundevils could be a serious threat come state tournament time. Their only loss came at the hands of the Class 5A defending champ on a neutral court. Española Valley’s offense has flirted with 70 points a couple of times this season and its defense is about 37 points per contest. Ron Drake is quite possibly the best coach in Class 4A.

Los Alamos Hilltoppers

Overall record: 9-9

Key wins: vs. St. Michael’s, Nov. 26; vs. Academy, Dec. 1; vs. St. Pius X, Jan. 6.

Key losses: at Pojoaque, Nov. 25; vs. Kirtland Central, Dec. 21; at Roswell, Dec. 27.

Outlook: It’s make-or-break time for the Hilltoppers, who, if the season ended today, would be squarely on the bubble to get into the playoffs. Los Alamos has worked hard this year on its press-break, something it will need if it wishes to maintain any hope of upsetting the Sundevils. McKenzie Logan, injured against St. Pius, is expected to return shortly.

Santa Fe Demons

Overall record: 9-5

Key wins: vs. Valencia, Dec. 2; vs. St. Michael’s, Dec. 10; vs. West Las Vegas, Dec. 20.

Key losses: vs. Taos, Nov. 25; vs. Highland, Dec. 17.

Outlook: The Demons turned in a better-than-expected nondistrict season, although the schedule wasn’t exactly stacked with top-shelf competition. The Demons have a tough opener tonight when they face Española Valley, then come back to face the Hilltoppers. Those games could go a long way to determining their district fate.
