Our View: Muni Building part of our history

History is a precious and perhaps debatable thing. One man’s piece of art is another man’s junk.That’s how it goes.But in general terms, we think that most people would agree that items of historical significance should be protected and honored. Places that frame who we are and how we began should be important.There is currently a movement by the Fuller Lodge Historic District Advisory Board to preserve our precious history.It is in this vein that we find the council’s decision to destroy the Municipal Building very disturbing.The facility has stood on Ashley Pond since 1967, was the centerpiece of our creation as a county and is a beautiful landmark that has come to symbolize Los Alamos.The council’s decision is very hard to understand.Yes, the county keeps telling us there are structural problems. But even the structural engineer that they brought in said it could be repaired – and for less money than building a new building.Why then, is it being torn down? We don’t understand the logic.Yes, we understand the desire of staff to have a fancier building and cooler offices. But when that new building will cost us some $4 million more and destroy our history, we are left wondering about the logic here.We are sad that the county council is so willing to throw away our history – and spent extra millions in the process.
