When the new police/jail/court complex was first discussed, we thought it was made clear that there needed to be some limits on cost. That there was a top end that should not be exceeded. That is what we thought.Yet, when the plan was presented to council, it was millions over that line and the council was forced to kill the plan and ask for a do-over.That is fine, as far as it goes. But this do-over – the fact that council instructions were ignored – will end up costing the taxpayers here almost $200,000. Money that will be totally wasted. With the delay in the complex, the courts have said that we must now re-remodel the Community Building again to make it fit for court hearings.Something they were willing to waive as long as the complex was on track. They were willing to work with us. But now, courts administrators are demanding that something be done and the council had no choice but to approve an $185,000 request to do more work in the Community Building, on top of the $600,000 already spent to prepare the old building for the courts. And this does not include the hidden cost of this delay.
