It’s a big week coming up for those standout players who will be competing in the final prep contests of their careers.
And those making their final appearances include a pair of players from Los Alamos.
The New Mexico High School Coaches Association will hold its All-Star volleyball, football and basketball contests starting Saturday. The All-Stars, which are selected from high school teams around the state, are graduating seniors invited to participate.
The All-Star contests start Saturday with volleyball. In the Class 4A/5A volleyball match, two former Los Alamos standouts, Danielle Ortiz and Savanna Romero will take part.
Ortiz, an all-state defensive player, committed earlier this summer to play for the University of New Mexico this coming fall. Romero was Los Alamos’ leader in assists for three consecutive years and was an all-stat first teamer for the 2012 season.
The pair helped Los Alamos to a state Class 4A semifinal appearance last season.
The 4A/5A game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at Albuquerque High School. Sandia head coach Megan Holland will be the 4A/5A team’s coach for the event.
The Class 2A/3A volleyball match will precede the 4A/5A contest. On the North side, Pojoaque Valley will be well represented, with former Elks Erica Rendon, Kyra Gonzales, Danielle Harrier and Mecole Quintana all scheduled to participate.
Also coming up, the 4A/5A football game is set for Wednesday at Milne Stadium. The 4A/5A boys basketball game will be Thursday at Albuquerque High.
Los Alamos will not be represented in those All-Star games.
