Apprentices to present free concerts

Each summer audiences in Albuquerque and Santa Fe anticipate the free concerts presented by the young singers who are members of The Santa Fe Opera’s acclaimed Apprentice Program.  The daytime concerts feature arias, duets and ensembles from opera and classical works and afford audiences in both cities the opportunity to hear some of the country’s young artists.
The Albuquerque concert will be at 3 p.m. July 22 in a new venue, St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE (one block northeast of the intersection of San Pedro and Menaul).  In Santa Fe, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis will be the venue for the concert at 11:30 a.m. July 26.  Both are free and everyone is welcome.  Seating begins one-half hour before the performances and is on a first-come first-served basis.
The Apprentice Singer Program draws singers from all over the world.  The apprentices make up the chorus for each of the five operas, appear in supporting roles and serve as covers for principal roles. Forty singers, all from the United States, were selected for this year’s program.
The concerts are funded in part by First National Bank of Santa Fe, the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the 1 percent Lodgers’ Tax.
