The community of Los Alamos is invited to join in the celebration of Native American Saints with Rev. Dr. Michael Oleska, Orthodox priest and internationally known lecturer and writer.
Father Oleksa will be the guest of Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church and will celebrate Divine Liturgy 10 a.m., July 28 at the church located at 2270 39th Street in Los Alamos.
Recognized as an “Elder” by the Alaska Federation of Natives, Dr. Oleksa was awarded the Distinguished Public Servant award by the Board of Regents of the University of Alaska and honored by the Alaska State Legislature and the National Governors Association.
Father Oleksa will bring two important historical icons, one of Saint Jacob, the first Orthodox Native American Saint, which was part of the rite of Glorification of Saint Jacob. The second icon is of Saint Innocent, Enlightener of Alaska.
The presence of these two historical icons will highlight Fr. Oleksa’s visit.
Fr. Oleksa will also celebrate Vespers at 5 p.m., July 27 at Saint Dimitri Church to which the public is also invited to attend. Following the Vespers service, the public may gather for an icon showing and a question and answer period outside the service.
