Nuts about fundraising

The Los Alamos Naval Junior ROTC unit is nuts about fundraising, Virginia nuts to be exact.

Cadet Ensign, Rachel Barthell, is the Public Affairs Officer for the unit and she is hoping to spread the news about their fundraising venture.

“The unit sells a nuts and candy fundraiser every year through the Virginia Diner Company,” said Barthell, “It is one of the largest fundraiser a we do throughout the year.”

The team always strives to sell more than the previous year and last year the unit sold $14,000, of the protein packed products.

“My favorite product is the pecan turtle doves! They have peanuts, carmel and chocolate, what more could you ask for,” she said.

If people don’t know a cadet then they can order online by going to virginiadiner.com, shop for what they want, then enter the Los Alamos High School NJROTC in New Mexico and the cadet name Rachel Barthell, and then checkout.

The unit raises funds to support a great deal of activities they do throughout the year including drill team, shooting and color guard.

The unit also hopes to raise enough funds to host their first shooting and academics meet at the high school. The funds will allow the Booster Club to make the event nice for visiting teams.

“We have one hundred and four cadets in the unit now and it’s really nice to have the large numbers, it means having lots of incoming freshman,” Bathell said. “Getting to work with the young kids and to show them how to do things and teach them all the things we, as upperclassmen, have learned from our peers makes the unit stronger and closer knit.”

If you prefer not to order online, call the unit at 663-3227 and request a visit.
