The Los Alamos Nukes rugby club rolled over Gallup in its season opener Saturday afternoon.
Mateo Cardiel scored a whopping 47 points as the Nukes blasted Gallup 97-10 at Sullivan Field. Los Alamos will next take on Rio Rancho at 5 p.m. Saturday, also at home.
In all, six Nukes scored tries against Gallup, including Cardiel’s five tries and Derek Selvage’s four tries. Cardiel also added 8 conversions and a pair of penalty kicks to his total.
Los Alamos’ head coach, Demetrio Cardiel, said Gallup fought tooth-and-nail to the end — Gallup scored with about 10 minutes remaining in the contest — but he feels his team has a chance to do very well this season and displayed that this weekend.
“The main things were our open play and our tackling,” he said. “We were doing extremely well and preventing them from gaining much ground. We were really taking advantage of our scoring opportunities.”
Also scoring tries for Los Alamos were Michael Miller and Dominic Chiri who came up with two tries each, while Caleb Biggs and Diego Cardiel got the Nukes on the board.
