LAS CRUCES — New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced the Aggies’ 2009 schedule Tuesday.
In 2009, the Aggies face six bowl teams from the 2008 season, as well as the two rivalry games and a Big Ten opponent.
“We are extremely excited to open the season at home and with a conference game,” head coach DeWayne Walker said. “To have a chance to start the season with a conference win is a great opportunity. I’m also excited that we have a bye week so late in the season. To start the season with three straight home games is a great advantage for our players and I hope the fans, students, faculty and the community will come out and support us this coming season.”
NMSU plays six home games and seven away games in 2009, including three straight home games to start the season for the first time since 1986.
In addition, the Aggies’ first game of the season will be against a conference opponent, something that NMSU has not done since 1985.
The Aggies’ five non-conference games feature Texas Prairie View A&M, the Mountain West’s San Diego State, Big Ten standout Ohio State and two of the Aggies’ biggest rivals in the UTEP Miners and the New Mexico Lobos.
The Aggies will open the season on Sept. 5 against Idaho. NMSU last beat Idaho in Las Cruces during the 2006 season.
The Aggies then host Prairie View in Aggie Memorial Stadium Sept 12. This is first meeting between the two schools.
That game is followed by a home game against the UTEP Miners Sept. 19. The Aggies then travel to Albuquerque for the 100th meeting between NMSU and the Lobos.
