District Five of the New Mexico Department of Transportation is prepared for the upcoming winter storm that is anticipated to hit the north central and northwestern portion of New Mexico tonight and tomorrow, according to a press statement issued by the agency.
District Five NMDOT is responsible for state highways within Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Taos, Rio Arriba and San Juan Counties. This includes interstates, US highways and NM highways. There is six to eight highway maintenance patrol yards located within each of these six counties.
District Five NMDOT maintenance crews are currently on 12-hour shifts and will be for the duration of the storm. Highway maintainers continue to service various pieces of equipment, such as dump trucks with snow plows and loaders, which are used to clear snow off the roadways. The maintenance patrol yards are stock piled with snow removal material that consists of mixtures of salt and cinders. During a snow storm, maintenance crews continue the process of applying salt and cinders and plowing snow off the roadway until the storm has passed and the snow and ice has melted off the roadway.
