NMAA: Board votes for playoff changes

The New Mexico Activities Association announced several rules changes following its Board of Directors meeting Wednesday in Albuquerque.
The NMAA, the governing body of most interscholastic prep sports in the state, made changes to several different sports. It did, however, table one of the biggest changes that had been proposed, allowing spring football practice.
In a press release issued Wednesday, the NMAA announced it will allow the higher seed in each first round state championship contest to host, essentially removing a previous rule that allowed a district champion to host a first round game regardless of its seed relative to its first-round opponent.
The NMAA’s board voted 7-5 to implement the change immediately.
That rule bit Los Alamos High School’s boys basketball team two years in a row, 2007-08 and 2008-09, when it had to go on the road for its first Class AAAA playoff game — to Deming and Farmington — despite being the better seed in both instances. Los Alamos had received at-large bids both seasons.
Another change that will effect the sport of basketball is allowing teams to go from a 12-player to a 14-player roster for the postseason.
