ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico VA Health Care System is warning veterans not to give out personal information over the phone.

The VA in Albuquerque says several veterans who have been patients have received phone calls from an individual claiming to be from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Affairs officials say the agency is not making the calls, and they are warning veterans that it's a scam.

The VA says the caller tells veterans the agency has lost some of their information, then asks for their Social Security number and other personal information.

In one case, the person asked for money for homeless veterans.
