SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A mugger who tried to steal a purse from the wife of a New Mexico sheriff came up empty when she fought him off.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano says his wife, Antoinette Solano, had just left a gas station Wednesday evening when a white minivan pulled up behind her. The van began tailgating her, so she pulled over to let the driver pass.
Instead, the van stopped too and a man in his 20s got out and walked up to Antoinette Solano's car. He quickly reached inside and grabbed her purse, but Solano says his wife grabbed it with one hand and fought the assailant off with her other until he ran back to the van and it sped away.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Antoinette Solano suffered some bruising and a sprain of her right shoulder.
