SANTA CLARA PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) — Members of New Mexico's congressional delegation are calling on Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and federal emergency managers to release funding to help prevent more flooding at Santa Clara Pueblo.
Tribal officials were forced to issue another disaster declaration this week following flooding along Santa Clara Creek.
The pueblo is located to the northeast of the Las Conchas burn scar.
No injuries were reported, but Pueblo Gov. Walter Dasheno says work done to prepare for post-fire flooding has been compromised and the community fears another flooding event now that monsoon season is under way.
Sens. Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan sent a letter to Salazar and other federal officials Friday.
They say the tribe has only received a small portion of federal funding to aid in flood mitigation and recovery efforts.
