Former Los Alamos track and field athlete Jordan Schoonover, earned a major award at her current school Colby College.
Schoonover, who attends the Maine college, was this year’s recipient of the Patty Valavanis Award. The Valavanis Award is given to athletes who demonstrate the qualities of academic and athletic excellence, personal leadership and sportsmanship.
This year, Schoonover was one of the captains of Colby’s women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Schoonover also earned Phi Beta Kappa and Presidential Scholar honors.
Schoonover, who majors in biology, earned all of Colby’s graduation requirements in three years at the school.
In track and field, Schoonover was the third-leading point-getter on the outdoor team, competing in the pentathlon and heptathlon as well as open long jumps and triple jumps.
In the final meet of her collegiate career, the New England Women’s Track and Field Championships, Schoonover was fourth in the heptathlon (3,363 points), finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.61) and long jump (15 feet, 5-1/2 inches).
The finish at the meet gave Schoonover her second All-New England honors, the second year in a row she earned the honor.
Schoonover graduated from LAHS in 2007.
