Former LA athletes excel in classroom for UNM Lobos
There were four former Los Alamos High School student athletes among those honored at the University of New Mexico Lobos Scholar-Athlete Banquet Monday night.
Among those four, two of them were the top-performing student-athletes on their teams for the 2011-12 academic year.
Los Alamos standout athletes who have made the jump to UNM and were honored for their academic prowess included Alex Kirk, Allen Pittman, Kyle Pittman and Amelia Weaver.
Kirk, one of the most high-profile athletes ever to come out of Los Alamos, finished with the highest grade-point average of any players on the Lobos men’s basketball team. Weaver, a top track and field athlete, paced the Lobo women’s track team in GPA.
Brothers Allen and Kyle Pittman were also recognized for their classroom performance Monday. The brothers finished among the top academics for the UNM men’s cross country program.
To be eligible for recognition, individuals must have maintained a 3.2 GPA or better.
