NEWS ALERT: Winter storm decscends on Los Alamos area

Snow, winds expected by Monday night

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM MST TUESDAY.

MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWS WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THIS MORNING IN THE NORTHWEST AND NORTH CENTRAL MOUNTAINS. COLDER AIR WILL ALLOW FOR SNOW TO DEVELOP OVER THE UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEY AS WELL AS THE SAN JUAN RIVER VALLEY TONIGHT. THE HEAVIER SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED DURING THE TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING TIME FRAME.

TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES WILL BE COMMON ACROSS THE LOWER ELEVATIONS WITH 8 TO 16 INCHES EXPECTED ABOVE 7500 FEET. THE HEAVIEST SNOW TOTALS WILL FAVOR THE WEST FACING SLOPES OF THE SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS... WHERE 2 OR 3 FEET OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE.

VERY STRONG WEST WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH WILL ALSO IMPACT THE AREA... CREATING GREATLY REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN EXTENSIVE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. BRIEF WHITEOUT CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE. PERSONS EXPECTING TO TRAVEL THROUGH THE REGION WILL ENCOUNTER DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.
